Racism in advertising.
This is what we’re told constantly. That our brown skin is ugly and that we can only be beautiful if we’re white.
This makes me sick
I have never seen any of this marketing… What the actual fuck?
You never see any of this marketing because these advertisements are only for countries like India/Pakistan (most of southern Asia) aka countries that have only brown people in them. So companies like Dove pretend to be all pro women loving themselves in the West so they seem ‘forward thinking’ or whatever, but show their true colors in poorer developing countries like mine that are willing to buy this shit.
Don’t buy their ‘feminist’ acts for one minute.
corporations do not give two fucks about peoples well being, “women’s empowerment” is trendy right now so Dove will appeal to that. they are full of shit and just want your money, they have no accountability
Before I made a tumblr account, the one and ONLY time I ever saw a reference to skin lightening was in a book my parents bought me around the age of ten, to explain the changes my body was going through at the onset of puberty. It was written in a kind, friendly tone, and it all but begged girls of color not to bleach their skin.
All those health classes and seminars I went to all through middle and high school? Never brought it up once. We are letting girls of color down in a serious, horrible way, and most of us don’t even know it.
That is really, really, disgusting.
Just for reference: I’m pretty much generically-white, and it seriously would have never occurred to me that people living anytime past the 1960s might seriously think something like that. I do remember someone asking me in college if it bugged me that my girlfriend was a different color than I was, and I seriously had no clue how that could even be a question. Like, if it bothered me, why would I be dating her?
FWIW, for any of y’all younger folks who are unsure about whether you need to be paler for people to like you: Hell fucking no. Except a few racist assholes and they’ll hate you anyway. Seriously, your natural skin color is totally fine.
I’m gonna go ahead and throw some classism in there.
See, back in The Day, it was popular for upper-class individuals to be pale because that meant you swanned around with a parasol for 5 minutes a day and then went inside your enormous mansion, whereas poor people worked all day in the sun so they were tanned. Then at some point it switched in the Western world and you slaved all day in an office whereas the wealthy got to lie idly in the sun, so the tanned individual became the ideal of beauty everyone wanted. It’s exactly the same deal as how plump was considered the ideal beauty because it meant you were properly fed, and now slim is the ideal because it means you have the time and energy to exercise and the money to afford food that isn’t 100% sugar substitute. You want to be LIKE THIS because THIS is how the movers and shakers look. (And race is inter-related with that of course, but it’s not the sole factor here.)
But in a lot of places you still have that “pale=beauty” aspect that isn’t (solely) related to “white people are the attractive ideal”. Pale was the ideal in some places before white people stuck their noses in, because pale was how the rich and powerful looked. People wanted to be pale because it meant you were rich and could afford to stay out of the sun.
In some ways it’s similar to white people using fake tanning stuff so they don’t look “pasty” and “sick” or whatever, like a nerd who tans only in the rays of her computer screen.
Just an FYI because nothing is as one-dimensional as tumblr as an entity likes to pretend it is. Shit be multi-layered, yo.
(Also as an aside I have some hyper-pigmentation on my legs which I’m forever sort of uncomfortable about and sometimes people use whitening creams for that sort of thing. They do have a use outside of distressing racisty stuff.)
